This is a color mutation of Armadillidium vulgare, a large species believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region. It has since become a cosmopolitan species. There are two cultivars of this morph within the hobby, the USA line and the Japanese line, named for where they were isolated. The American line is said to be less prolific and larger in body size than the Japanese line. In addition to the size and reproductive differences, the American line has more numerous and prominent yellow blotching than the Japanese line.

This species is known for its prolific breeding and ease of cultivation. Like all Armadillidiidae, they can roll into a ball when disturbed. They prefer drier conditions and higher ventilation, much like other European Armadillidium species.

Due to extreme temperatures and to ensure the safety of the animals being shipped, the only shipping option available currently is FedEx Priority Overnight.

Local meet-up option is available all year round for our customers in DFW.

How to choose a shipping method:

Shipping is offered throughout the continental US (48 states). We have three different options for live animal shipments.

Please read below and choose the appropriate shipping method at checkout, or your order may be canceled and refunded.

  • Orders that contain arachnids,¬†assassin bugs, and other venomous¬†invertebrates can ONLY be shipped through FedEx¬†Priority Overnight.¬†
  • Isopods, springtails, mantids, and cockroaches can be¬†shipped through FedEx¬†Priority Overnight or USPS Priority Express;¬†USPS Priority is also available during spring and fall when weather permits.

Packages shipped through FedEx Priority Overnight are dropped off on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for next-day arrival. For USPS Priority Express / USPS Priority, shipping days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

For our customers in TX, LA, and OK, we offer expo pick-up and DFW local meet-up options so you can save on shipping. See Expo Schedule for details.

What to expect after placing an order:

After you place an order on our website, we will contact you within 12 hours to let you know the delivery date and FedEx/USPS pick-up location. Please respond and let us know if that works for you. The package will NOT be shipped until we have your confirmation. A tracking number will be provided on the day of shipment.

There will be times when shipping must be delayed due to weather, our schedule, or if a tarantula you ordered has recently molted or appears to be about to molt. You will be notified if that happens, and we will work out another date.

Carrier delays happen, so please ensure you or someone you know will be available to pick up your package, even if it's 1-3 days late.

Live Arrival Guarantee (LAG):

Buddha Bugs offers LAG but ONLY when the below conditions are met:

  • "Freebies" are not covered by LAG.
  • For the safety of the animals and to ensure the best chance of live arrival, orders are shipped to your nearest authorized FedEx Ship Center or USPS location closest to your home address and held for pickup.
  • Package must be picked up from FedEx/USPS within 4 hours of arrival. Please bring a valid ID with you.

  • In the unlikely event of a DOA, we require notice and evidence within 1 hour of delivery/pick up. You must provide a clear photo/video of the deceased specimen. Refunds will not include shipping costs, and replacements may not always be available.¬†

We can offer home delivery upon request, but LAG cannot be guaranteed due to the unpredictability of this shipping method.

If a carrier delay causes your animals to arrive on a day other than originally scheduled, we will still honor the LAG if the delay does not exceed (3) days past the originally scheduled delivery day.

Please remember that FedEx/USPS DOES NOT reimburse Buddha Bugs for lost packages or the loss of any live animals. We take as many precautions as we possibly can to ensure we ship at a time when delays are less likely to happen and your new pets will arrive safely.
