This is a dwarf species initially described from coastal Mediterranean regions. However, it has now been introduced to many other places worldwide due to human activities. They thrive in low ventilation and moist conditions, but excessive moisture with inadequate ventilation can lead to higher mortality rates. This species is relatively easy to culture and reproduces rapidly under favorable conditions. Due to their small size and non-aggressive nature, they make a good choice for use as clean-up crew in bioactive enclosures. They tend to spend most of their time burrowed and are not very active or visible within the enclosure until their numbers increase. When disturbed, they display a posture of tonic immobility.
