This is a small species that was first discovered in Madagascar, but it has since been found in several other locations, including Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, the Arabian Peninsula, and Southern China. In the hobbyist community, they were originally labeled as Philoscia sp. 'Thai' because the founding hobby stock was derived from specimens collected in Northern Thailand. However, upon examination, they were identified as Agnara madagascariensis, although no formal publication lists this species as occurring in Thailand.

This species is easy to cultivate and reproduces quickly under favorable conditions. They can adapt to a wide range of ventilation conditions, but it is important to maintain humidity and soil moisture levels because dry conditions can be fatal. Generally, they prefer higher ventilation or drier conditions if ventilation is low. However, it is important to note that if ventilation is too low and conditions are too wet, it can lead to an increase in mancae and adult mortality. This species is typically active and can be easily found within their enclosure as they favor surface activity over burrowing. Due to their small size and non-aggressive nature, they make a good choice for use as a clean-up crew in bioactive enclosures.

They are an extremely sexually dimorphic species, with males sporting a red coloration of varying intensity and females maintaining a grey color. The attached photos illustrate the differences between the sexes.

Shipping

Shipping method:

Shipping is offered throughout the continental US (48 states) through FedEx Priority Overnight. Shipments are dropped off on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for next-day arrival and required to be picked up in person at your closest FedEx Ship Center.

We offer expo pick-up and DFW local meet-up options so you can save on shipping. See Expo Schedule for details.

What to expect after placing an order:

After you place an order on our website, we will contact you within 12 hours to let you know the delivery date and FedEx pick-up location. Please respond and let us know if that works for you. The package will NOT be shipped until we have your confirmation. A tracking number will be provided on the day of shipment.

There will be times when shipping must be delayed due to weather, our schedule, or if a tarantula you ordered has recently molted or appears to be about to molt. You will be notified if that happens, and we will work out another date.

Carrier delays happen, so please ensure you or someone you know will be available to pick up your package, even if it's 1-3 days late.

Live Arrival Guarantee (LAG):

Buddha Bugs offers LAG but ONLY when the below conditions are met:

  • "Freebies" are not covered by LAG.
  • For the safety of the animals and to ensure the best chance of live arrival, orders must be shipped to your nearest authorized FedEx Ship Center and held for pickup.
  • Package must be picked up from FedEx within 4 hours of arrival. Please bring a valid ID with you.

  • In the unlikely event of a DOA, we require notice and evidence within 1 hour of delivery/pick up. You must provide a clear photo/video of the deceased specimen. Refunds will not include shipping costs, and replacements may not always be available.

  • ANY DEVIATION OF THIS CAN RESULT IN LAG VOID

We can offer home delivery upon request, but LAG cannot be guaranteed due to the unpredictability of this shipping method.

If a carrier delay causes your animals to arrive on a day other than originally scheduled, we will still honor the LAG if the delay does not exceed (3) days past the originally scheduled delivery day.

Please remember that FedEx DOES NOT reimburse Buddha Bugs for lost packages or the loss of any live animals. We take as many precautions as we possibly can to ensure your new pets arrive safely.
