This is an insectivorous nocturnal gecko endemic to western Hainan, an island province in southern China. They are most often referred to as 'Bawangling cave geckos' within the hobby and are second only to G. hainanensis as the most commonly kept in captivity in the genus. The ‘cave gecko’ common name is a misnomer, as they are not troglodytic, though they are associated with karst topography. Species in this genus are relatively easy to keep in captivity, requiring no special lighting, and thrive in temperatures ranging from the upper 60s to the mid 80s (°F). They can even be kept in the upper 80s for short periods. However, care should be taken at the higher end of this temperature range; moist conditions are essential when temperatures are higher. A constant temperature of 75-78 degrees is suitable year-round. As with other insectivorous lizards, feeders should be gutloaded and dusted with reptile vitamin supplements, including calcium and vitamin D.
