Idiothele mira (blue-footed baboon tarantula) 0.5"

This is a unique dwarf Harpactirinae from South Africa. In a subfamily dominated by mostly tannish brown/golden brown spiders, this species’s steel blue tarsi and metatarsi mark it as a truly impressive species. In addition to the distinct coloration, this species and the closely related Idiothele nigrofulva construct tubular burrows underneath rocks and fallen trees in which they seal the entrance of the burrow with a wafer-like silken trap door disguised within the surrounding landscape. This behavior is special among tarantulas, with only ~10 species known to construct similar retreats.
