Species Overview

Loxosceles laeta, commonly known as the Chilean recluse spider, is a small terrestrial crevice-dwelling spider native to western South America. Adults range from pale yellowish-brown to dark reddish-brown, with spiderlings and mature males generally paler than adult females. The carapace often displays a darker median area that may form the familiar violin-shaped marking, while the abdomen is comparatively plain and covered with fine hairs. The long, slender legs are typically uniform tan to reddish-brown and lack bold bands or prominent spines. Mature males are smaller-bodied and proportionally longer-legged than females. Like other members of the genus, this species possesses six eyes arranged in three widely separated pairs, and reliable identification requires the complete combination of physical characteristics rather than the violin marking alone.

In captivity, L. laeta establishes an irregular silken retreat within a narrow vertical crevice and may remain almost completely motionless inside it for extended periods. Activity occurs primarily after dark, when individuals position themselves on or near the surrounding silk or leave the retreat to search for prey. The species is generally reluctant to bite and normally attempts to remain concealed or escape when disturbed, but bites can occur if a specimen is trapped against the skin or otherwise prevented from retreating. Its venom is medically significant, and documented envenomations have occasionally produced severe local tissue injury or systemic loxoscelism.

Loxosceles laeta Care

Loxosceles laeta adapts well to captivity when maintained in a secure, well-ventilated enclosure with a mostly dry substrate and a narrow retreat. Although its environmental requirements are straightforward, its small size and medically significant venom require careful containment and deliberate maintenance practices. Members of Loxosceles generally have difficulty scaling clean, smooth vertical glass or plastic, making smooth-sided containers useful for housing and maintenance. However, this limitation should never be relied upon as the sole means of containment because scratches, seams, ventilation openings, accumulated silk, and enclosure décor can provide footholds. Long tools should be used during all maintenance and rehousing, and a secure catch cup should be kept within immediate reach. Whenever possible, these procedures should be performed inside a larger secondary container capable of holding the spider if it escapes the primary enclosure.

• Enclosure: 1 oz condiment cup or similar for spiderlings, upgraded as needed with growth; 4” x 4” x 4” or similar for adults. Use a tightly locking lid and ventilation openings smaller than the spider’s carapace. 
• Substrate: A shallow layer of coconut fiber, peat moss, topsoil, sand, or a similar substrate is sufficient. Excessive substrate depth is not required. Provide a vertical or angled piece of cork bark positioned close to the enclosure wall to create a narrow, dark retreat.
• Temperature: 72–82°F. 
• Humidity: Low to moderate ambient humidity is generally sufficient. Approximately 25% of the substrate should remain slightly moist to provide a humidity gradient while allowing the remainder to stay dry. Avoid consistently damp substrate, condensation, and poorly ventilated conditions.
• Diet: Fruit flies, crickets, cockroaches, and other appropriately sized feeder insects.
• Feeding: Spiderlings can be offered appropriately sized prey once or twice weekly. Juveniles and adults are typically fed every 7–14 days, with feeding frequency adjusted based on prey size, growth rate, and the condition of the individual animal.
• Water: Lightly moisten the designated portion of substrate as needed. Provide water droplets on enclosure walls, cork bark, or other surfaces through regular light misting. This species readily drinks from these surfaces. Do not saturate the substrate or mist the entire setup.
• Routine Maintenance: Remove uneaten prey, monitor moisture levels, and spot-clean when necessary.

Natural History

Loxosceles laeta was described from Chile by Hercule Nicolet in 1849 under the name Scytodes laeta. Western South America is generally regarded as its original range, although its long association with human structures has obscured the boundary between native and introduced South American populations. It is now the most broadly distributed South American recluse spider and has repeatedly been transported beyond the continent. Current records include introductions to Canada, the United States, Guatemala, Portugal, Finland, and Australia, although many of these occurrences remain highly localized.

Within Chile, records extend from Arica in the far north to the Magallanes Region in the south. The species occurs naturally in arid northern habitats, where specimens have been documented beneath rocks, within small cavities beneath boulders, and around the roots of Prosopis trees. In central and southern Chile, it is much more strongly associated with buildings and other human-modified environments. Individuals occupy dry, undisturbed spaces behind furniture and picture frames, inside cupboards and stored materials, beneath folded cardboard, and within cracks in walls. Laboratory trials found that L. laeta prefers narrow vertical crevices over horizontal retreats and is especially likely to occupy spaces containing silk left by another member of the species.

After dark, individuals may remain near the retreat entrance or travel short distances in search of prey. Documented prey includes flies, beetles, ants, isopods, moths, crickets, and other spiders. The irregular silk surrounding the retreat does not function as a conventional prey-capture web, but its loose threads can restrain small arthropods and alert the spider to their presence. Individuals may remain faithful to the same retreat for extended periods, although others change retreats every few days.

Females attach pale silken egg sacs within the protected retreat. Egg sacs commonly contain approximately 80–100 eggs, although published counts vary substantially. Under warm, well-fed conditions, spiderlings can reach maturity in approximately one year after 9–12 molts, while development may require more than two years under cooler conditions. The species can also survive extended periods without food, a trait that has contributed to its persistence in buildings and accidental transport between regions.

Despite its abundance within some occupied structures, L. laeta does not actively seek contact with people. Verified bites most often occur when a hidden spider is compressed against the skin inside clothing, bedding, towels, or stored objects. Envenomation can range from minimal or localized effects to cutaneous loxoscelism and, less commonly, systemic illness involving hemolysis and kidney injury. Because many unrelated skin conditions are incorrectly attributed to recluse spiders, diagnosis should not be based on the appearance of a lesion alone. Any suspected bite from a captive specimen should receive prompt medical evaluation.
