This is a large species native to Europe, but they have been introduced to many parts of the world due to human activity. They are prolific breeders that tolerate a wide range of temperature and soil moisture conditions, though the adults prefer drier conditions or at least access to them. Specimens tend to spend most of their time burrowed, especially when surface-level moisture is low. Due to their prolific nature, a wide range of husbandry tolerances, lack of surface activity, and tonic immobility behavior, this species is a perfect candidate as a clean-up crew for many types of animals, including insectivorous lizards, such as Pogona sp. (bearded dragons) and Eublepharis macularius (leopard geckos).
